Abstract

The rise in demand for a sustainable built environment in residential construction has informed the need to consider the environmental and economic performance of building materials. The study investigates the life-cycle cost assessment of sustainable building materials in residential buildings, emphasizing on initial investment, installation, maintenance, energy use, replacement and end-of-life. A method of comparative assessment approach is suggested to compare sustainable and conventional materials in various phases of the building life cycle. The study is based on literature research and takes into account the durability of materials, energy usage, environmental impacts, and maintenance costs in order to assess the overall cost-effectiveness. It also looks at how life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle cost analysis (LCCA), energy simulation and Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be used together to help make informed choices about materials in the selection and planning of construction. The assessment aims to determine whether sustainable materials can offer a future cost and environmental benefit, but at a higher up-front price. The study also highlights the need for accurate cost information, suitable evaluation periods, and standardized evaluation criteria when comparing different material alternatives. It is expected to provide architects, engineers, developers, and policymakers with a tool to consider their decisions in residential development with both a sense of economic and environmental responsibility. The study includes life cycle costs and sustainability indicators to promote sustainable, long-lasting and cost-effective building of housing.
